November 2009 - "Mixing, editing and basic chord progressions"

The current assignments in our class involve the use of basic chord progressions (I-vi-ii-V-I and I-IV-V-I) to assemble basic songs. We have also been dissecting a pop song recently recorded in our metro area for the purposes of learning how to correctly mix a song. Click here to hear some current student projects.

Earlier on this year we discussed some examples of pop song form using the following songs:
TERMS:

1)Intro
This term usually refers to the beginning chord progression of a song.

2) Verse
This term refers to the first main part of the song, the main melody or idea.

3) Chorus
This term refers to the part of the song that should be the most memorable- usually the title of the song is contained here.

4) Pre-Chorus
This term refers to a chord progression that precedes the chorus of a song.

5) Release or Bridge
This is the part of the song that will be different from all verses and chorus- it will lend a musical “relief” to the song.
